They wanted 3,300 pesos ($165) but it would be an all day job so I would have to bring the car in early in the morning.
Drove back to OC. My 2 reliable shops said the book's standard is 8 hours or $800 firm. Dealer would charge the same 8 hours or about $1,200. Damn expensive. No deal.
Drove to TJ a Saturday morning arriving about 10 AM. That place had lots of cars waiting but they assigned Ivan, the English –speaking mech, to start the work. We booked an UBER to La Zona to hang out with the girls. I came back at 5 PM, the guy had sealed the front cover with Silicone but had not put all pulleys back. He spent another hour assembled the rest of the pulleys, valve cover, belt and tensioner. It was dark, about 6:30 when he finished. He spent some 8 to 9.5 hours on that job since the car was small with very tight engine access. His shop rate worked out about $20 per hour. I was happy the car even fired up so immediately drove home without making him do a test drive.
The leak was fixed, but the next few days I found a small rattle coming from the engine only while driving in decelaration, did not affect performance, just annoying. I thought he misassembled the timing chain, which caused the computer to retard the timing chain to prevent knocking, which could be a major problem. Brought it back next weekend. He said he never touched the timing chain, if timing was off, engine would not start and would pull a check engine code. I insisted whatever he did caused that rattle, and he had to fix it. He said to bring it back during weekday when they have more time.
Long story, but previously that car twice had engine mounts replaced, came back with rattles. The shops could not find the sources and refused to fix them. After wasting lots of time, money, hassles and frustration with the shops here, I drove the car down to TJ. TJ shop found loose bolts in the mount, a leaky exhaust gasket, fixed for $30. Needless to say I wasted lots of time, felt frustrated and lost confidence in incompetent and irresponsible OC repair shops.
This time Ivan said the shop had to charge 400 pesos for him to check. I refused to pay, insisted he had to fix that rattle. He backed down, drove my car around in the parking lot then took it in the bay. I resigned to the fact he may never find the source of that annoying rattle, and I may just have to live with it. He took an airgun, tightened 2 bolts under the top engine mount, backed the car out and said problem fixed. I was incredulous how he found the rattle source so quickly. He confirmed he found 2 loose bolts, tightened them and the problem was fixed. I took the car, drove home but was still skeptical. Driving in the next few days, I verified the rattle was fixed. The car sounds solid. Damn. I was happy.
Sorry for the long story, but the mechanics in TJ just saved me lots of money, time, frustration and headache over OC shops for even small repair jobs. I recommend the bros bring their cars to Tj for all repairs and maintenance, save some serious money and time to spend on La Zona's chicas.

The tastiest, juiciest grilled meats in the world at Churrascarria do Brasil, Tijuana

Some of the tastiest, juiciest, creamiest, tenderest grilled beef I ate in the world, was at Churrascarria do Brasil. That includes the masters of grilled meats in Brazil and Argentina. US grills like Morton, Maestro, Ruth Chris are big jokes, not anywhere near competition. I am not kidding and hope not appear overstating. Will have to take my big-eater bros to this grill.
Looks like the Picanha Top Sirloin Cap is the favorite cuts for Brazil and Latin America, sirloin with a fat cap on top. That cut is beefy, rich, tasty and creamy with a slightly smoky flavor. Dam Delicious. The brisket was also tender, juicy, creamy and tasty. The tenderloin was cut into strips and grilled over smoky flame, not so juicy. They served so many different cuts of meats, all were tender and tasty. I also like the hump, called Cupim in Brazil, which is mostly fat, creamy like butter, not found in Mexico. I like the Picanha cut so much, will try to buy and grill them at home on the spit. Damn.
I ate so much meat, like 4 plates of different cuts, I could barely walk. My metabolism is now slow. The meat stayed in me for 2 days before fully digested. OTOH My wingman is a pro chef and a big eater. He downed about 8 plates of meats plus veggies, then 2 plates of deserts. He immediately went back to HK for sessions with 2 girls. He fully digested the meal by about 2 AM. Damn.
I had not not recommended Mr. Pampas to the bros due to their dry, overcooked meats, but the bros should definitely take an UBER ride for this sumptuous feast at Churrascaria do Brasil, one of the best $12 treats in Tijuana. You can try Carillo body shop on calle 3 corner Negrete. Ruben Carillo is a cool guy, speaks English and does good work for very good price.
On my car, he repaired and painted 1 fender, hood, bumper and a rear spoiler, all for $200. Paint was smooth and shiny, matched perfectly. OC shop estimated $3,100. Damn.
A wingman rear ended another car, broke the head light. Carillo repaired the dent, assembled a new head light, repainted hood, bumper, fender for 2,500 pesos or $125. LA estimated $1,900. His work was good, paint matched well; could not tell there was a repair.
Carillo will do all kinds of body work, good work, very cheap.

Azul's Steaks and HK hotties

Tijuana compared to other destinations
I had some wonderful times in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. I always like Canadians for being nice, gentle and civilized.
