Works with your existing smartphone -- much less obvious than carrying around two phones.

Can set it up to automatically send calls and texts straight to your mobile.

Can set up a "burner" Gmail account to use Google Voice, and if you are careful to only access it with private browsing there are no breadcrumbs.

Can turn on Do Not Disturb when not hobbying without interrupting normal mobile functions / number.

Free, or one-time $10 (charge to port an existing number to Google Voice (international calls still cost money and require you to have a balance on your GVoice account, but international calling is cheap with GVoice).

If calling from home, etc. , can use GVoice with your landline (if you are a dinosaur like me and still have one) to avoid mobile static.

Outgoing calls are made to a GVoice "switchboard" number -- your phone will have a record of a call to a random number (however, if called from your phone, it will usually dial the last GVoice number you called).

GVoice app is pretty well-featured and stable, allows you to check hobbying number call / text history and voicemails from your mobile, and doesn't require you to go through a web interface to make calls.

Not truly anonymous; Google has all your info. But if things get to the point where Google gets subpoenaed for my info, I'm already screwed. Must remember to turn on Do Not Disturb so texts from special ladyfriends don't pop up on your iPhone screen while it's face-up on the table in a meeting at work.

Also tracphone offers a "bring your own phone" package. So you can just put their SIM card into any of your old unused phone and activate it to their service.

Go to the app store, whether it's iPhone or Android, and you'll find a number of free text / call apps that you can install and that won't cost you that much. Check out TextNow, FreeTone, Google Voice, or Talkatone.

Depends on factors- the laziness of the cops involved, the determination (prickliness) of the neighbors, etc. If the neighbors persist and complain regularly-and they could potentially lie and say they 'think' its drug sales, the cops will come by and (to 'protect' themselves from public complaint), create a record and maybe issue a warning and / or a citation --initially to any occupant of the 'offending' location, but eventually, it would go to the Landlord -doesn't' have to be complex --as simple as 'Public nuisance' -and for those w / shorter memories, back in '09, Tommy Darthead filed a civil lawsuit to go after Craigslist citing the users as creating a "public nuisance. " Or they could use 'occupancy' or health dept laws-IOW, using everything and anything except charging the actual activities going on. Its the old battys with too much time on their hands that you'd have to worry about. A 3 flat apartment or something smaller might also be more difficult to pull off. My advice is to be like a gazelle, hide in the numbers.
