If you aren't using the word "friend" loosely, I would just give her the cash and have her check into a Red Roof Inn or Motel 6. The room will be in her name, they accept cash, and most importantly; you are off the hook once you leave.

It is damn near impossible to get a hotel room without revealing your identity. Even if you pay with a prepaid CC or cash, they still want to see an ID. And they will photocopy it.
If you put the room in the girl's name, they need to see her ID. And some girls I know don't have an ID or can't find it.
One trick I use, but it's not foolproof: Purchase the room online through [URL]Hotels.Com[/URL]. Put the reservation in a name spelled like yours with first initial, for example: D. Leathermon. Then when you checkin with your ID that says David Letterman just say oh they always misspell my name. Most clerks won't bother correcting it. And the address will show some random address of [URL]Hotels.Com[/URL] not your personal address.
I understand why a hotel owner needs the ID. If there's trouble or damage they need to know who rented the room.
