I use one of those apps. I don't get out enough to justify another phone and the cost that goes with it. A pay as you go phone makes you pay for a whole month which is about $30. It only cost a couple of bucks to use an app. Even my home phone is a Viop system.

When that money expires in 30 days, you have 60 days (I think? Maybe it's 90) to add money to the account before they cancel the line. So if you don't hobby a lot, you could get by on as little as $40/ yr on a burner phone, which covers you voice and text.

I use a prepaid trac phone it's 20 for a 90 day card so it's only about 7 per month I never use all my minutes. Maybe not as cheap as an app but keeps it off your phone my only problem is I can't figure out how to put a security code on it so it can't be open if found by family.

No personal info required to activate the phone. All the trac phones I ever had wanted your info or another (home) phone number.
You can also get a plan that has unlimited talk and text for $2 per day.
I always pull the battery out when I'm not using it to make sure the built-in gps doesn't have power. Cheap either way for the security.
