I've seen one escort bounce from a reasonable (by today's standards) 250 to 350, and from there 500, and then 800 within the span of a month and a half. Do they really think this is a profitable long-term endeavor in that sense?

If I think their adjusted rate is in line with the expected service, I'll bite. Otherwise I tell them I appreciate the attempt to meet my budget requirements but I'm still unable to commit. I almost never hear a bad word from these ladies during this process and we wish each other a good day and I tell them to be safe and get their bag.
It's just business and most of these ladies understand that. They put their rates high because some people will just pay it rather than trying to negotiate an acceptable rate for both parties. Some give the impression that her performance is real good, and that is valuable. She does give the "I'm a professional sex worker " vibe, and I figure that is how she is justifying her profession to herself. Most of them get indignant at the suggestion of lowering their rates. They take it personally. Women are all emotional, not logical. The ones who appear to treat it like business are more than likely giving in to their need for the money, but carrying their resentment in to the transaction and future transactions with you.
I agree that "upscale escort" prices have gotten out of hand. I'm not sure who their target audience is anymore at these rates.
