Related ContentThe city condemned the Day's Motel on Versailles Road yesterday after finding several fire and safety hazards, and occupants have until Monday to relocate.

Inspectors visited the motel June 20 after receiving a complaint from Lexington police, said David Jarvis, director of the Lexington's Division of Code Enforcement.

Police noticed piles of debris, burned outlets and other problems while responding to calls, Jarvis said.

Mohammed Shalash, who described himself as a partner in the business, said some residents live at the motel for years and most of them are "good people."

But some neighbors, which includes the Hope Center, a shelter for the homeless, accepted the news of condemnation with cheers and applause, saying drugs, prostitution and other crimes have been rampant there.

Lexington police Lt. Richard Bottoms said that while the area is not in his sector, "we have had problems there in the past," and police have conducted some prostitution stings and drug investigations.

Even as condemnation loomed, Shalash, sitting behind a plastic divider at the motel's lobby, welcomed two people, individually, who had apparently rented rooms at the motel before.

The Day's Motel has about 40 rooms, most of them occupied, Shalash said. A single room for one night rents for about $35.

Shalash said he plans to make electrical repairs in the 60 days provided by code enforcement.

"What they did was unfair," Shalash said of the city.

Jarvis said all three buildings on the property will have to be completely rewired, adding "It'll be a lot of work."

Code Enforcement told the motel's owner last month to hire an electrician to inspect problems. A representative from Milner Electrical Co. of Lexington walked the property and offered the owner a timetable for fixing issues such as unsuitable light fixtures near showers, interior lighting fixtures on the outside of the property and missing grounding conductors, which creates risk of electrocution.

Jarvis also noted charred outlets, and he said some occupants were illegally using hot plates in their rooms.

In one room, a woman who did not want to be identified pointed to an uncovered light switch in her bathroom, a hanging cabinet door under the sink and a smoke detector that wasn't completely attached to the ceiling.

"This is an old motel and it's not easy for an old motel to be up to code," Shalash said.

Shalash said he spent more than $3,000 to repair bathroom outlets, and maintenance workers also checked smoke detectors for needed repairs.

He said he was not pleased to hear the entire motel, which he considers safe, was being condemned, and would have preferred to shut down sections while repairs were made.

This was the first time Jarvis could recall a comprehensive inspection at the Day's Motel, although Code Enforcement has investigated sporadic complaints.

Shalash said the Day's Motel has not had any fires while in operation since the mid-80s, and code violations always had been minor.

"I have no other source of income," Shalash said.
