One time I was in a situation similar to yours and was about to mail a friend of mine in ICE custody and my attorney friend talked me out of it. I have heard that sometimes prison staff also read or monitor incoming mail.

If they got you they got you, if they don't you can get yourself into trouble by trying to "explain.
