My understanding is a company puts fake ads on the BP, and if a "John" were to text that number in the ad, they put your number up on their website, and try to find your name and pic through social media and post that info as well. If the John wants the info taken down, they got to pay a hefty fee. Basically extortion through public humiliation. Similar business model as the mugshot websites.
