I use text now and it works fine with a burner email. Texts will disappear after non use but come back up if you retext.

As far as the apps go, I recommend 2nd Line. It's worked pretty damn well for me. Even with calling. As long as you establish a log in with a dump email, you can keep your text history if you have to delete the app daily for the sake of an SO that has access to your phone. And I've not even upgraded to premium. Doesn't seem to be a need to.
