Galesburg stripper turns life around- for now
From the Galesburg Paper:
The 25-year-old blonde with pale blue eyes told it straight Tuesday. The story came unvarnished, with a little help from a cup of mocha fortified with two shots of espresso.
Three nights a week, she drives 45 minutes to a winding strip of blacktop better known as Gulfport. There she struts on a stage, grips a pole and takes off her clothes.
Julia Sullivan strips for money. So she is used to having nothing to hide. "I guess I was a bad kid," Sullivan said. "Bad, bad kid. I dropped out of Galesburg High School when I was 17 and my mom kicked me out of the house."
She was seated in a chair inside Innkeeper's. The voices of the late-afternoon crowd bounced off the high ceiling.
"That was in 1999. I lived with friends for a while and I slept in my car when I couldn't find anyplace to go."
Sullivan bit her bottom lip and took a sip of mocha plus. "Then, during the winter, someone broke out all the windows in my car. It was, like, 30-below zero and I had no where to go. I went to my stepdad's and he took me in. I went back to school and graduated in 2000."
The blonde with pale blue eyes held the cup in both hands and smiled. "I went to cosmetology school and I was working at Wendy's, but that just wasn't cutting it. I started selling drugs here in Galesburg. Cocaine.
"The Feds caught up to me in the fall of 2001. I was indicted on Oct. 11 - my birthday - and I was arrested in Burlington on Oct. 13. I had started dancing in Gulfport and I had stopped selling drugs, but it was too late by then."
Between sips of mocha plus, Sullivan recounted her 36-month odyssey through the correctional system.
"First, there was three months in the Mercer County jail, then I did rehab in Peoria in the New Leaf program. Then I went to the Peoria County jail for three months before I did nine months in the CICTA rehab program.
"Let's see, then I went to Chicago for a two-month evaluation before I was shipped - by van - to Oklahoma City. After that I rode, I'm not kidding, 'Con Air' to Texas. They put us on a plane and we were in shackles. In Texas, I did nine months of an 18-month sentence."
The blonde with pale blue eyes exhaled. "I found God when I was in prison. That saved me. I read the Bible every day and I worked out in my little cell four times a day. God put me in prison so I could look at my life and deal with my life."
Today, Sullivan does more than strip three nights a week in Gulfport. She attends classes at Carl Sandburg College and plans to study child psychology.
"And I go to church every Sunday. But I do that at night, because I get home so late Saturday night."
Sullivan said she knows some people judge her because of what she does to pay the rent.
"People might think I'm easy, or a prostitute. I've had people call me dirty, or say that I have no morals. People think strippers are stupid or ignorant.
"But I think God knows me really well. I don't think he condemns me for what I do to make money."
The blonde with pale blue eyes bit her bottom lip. She drained the last of the mocha plus from the cup in her hands.
"I was raped by people I knew, pistol-whipped and raped another time by three guys I didn't know and left in a field. I think about what I've been through and I know it all made me who I am today.
"In prison I learned a lot. Prison did for me what it's supposed to. I learned that I'm a good person. I learned that where you're at has a lot to do with where you came from." Julia Sullivan smiled after she said those words.
Update on Gulfport clubs?
Anyone know what's happened to the Gulfport clubs since the flooding? Be a shame if they had to shut down for good.

I knew the woman the was there last summer.
She was a licensed masseuse from Chicago. I was a good friend. Very weak English. Anyway, the weasel owner did not tell her about the BackPage ad in the escort section. She was literally under the impression it was a legit place. So I know she did not offer extras. I mention this only to point out how, our perceptions can change. We go in and get pissed that they don't offer extras. And yet, sometimes, they have no clue what somebody has gotten them into. I met a legit masseuse, who told me she was at the (legit) AMP because her husband had gambling debts and she was sent to the US to help pay off his debt!
Now closed after getting busted. I'm more upset by the fact that apparently the cops have more game than I do. The last few times I went it was a no go for extras.
Might give this one a shot?
I have not tried this one out yet but she does sound like fun and for a low donation! Might be worth it.
Thanks for the TOFTT and heads up. Looks like I'll be saving my money on this trip or stop off for a rest break somewhere on the way back home.
