Try 8th street between 3rd ave west and 8th ave. Also third west from closed Captain D and the notel a few blocks past 8th street.

The area you mention around the McD's is Woodlawn, not Avondale. On 1st, Avondale doesn't generally begin until you get past the railroad tracks down from the motel on 50th. Well I figure it's about time for a spa report.
