Many years ago I had a relationship with a girl who worked FOR me, not WITH me, and it turned into a disaster. I didn't lose my job, but I came damn close. Keep in mind that women (in my humble opinion) are more likely to "fall in love" or some crazy shit like that and get much more emotionally tied to the relationship, which can only lead to problems. Unless you're 100% sure that she truly wants ONLY a platonic relationship (and how the hell do you know that? Don't do it. My 2 cents worth.

By inviting her out to dinner or a drink after work to discuss it. Never hurts to ask especially if she's just a coworker and not a subordinate. I think if she jumps at the chance to do something outside of work alone with you it might be worth pursuing, but expectations may need to be discussed before taking it further IMHO.

It does involve notifying HR, both are advised of protocols, both are advised of what could happen if the relationship turns sour, etc. It's mainly a way of protecting the company from potential lawsuits, but it's also a way of forcing the couple to think about "what if" without the "honeymoon glow of rise colored glasses".

I worked with someone who did get involved with a lady at work. Neither had any managerial impact on the other & both were of similar ranks within their respective departments. He wanted casual, she fell in love overnight. After thinks couldn't get worked out, she goes running to HR about him 'creating a hostile work environment'. They were going fire him except I had convinced him to save the crazy texts, record conversations, etc. He was able to prove he was not the cause of the problem. 9 times out of 10, the guy is going to be presumed guilty until proven innocent.

I've actually had conversations with people that agreed that things are fucked up, but changing would mean voting for someone on the other side. No way they could get themselves to do it.
