A Cautionary Facebook Tale
After years of street mongering, I attempted to expand my horizons checking out the Internet options (STG, Listcrawler, CityXguide), mostly to inconsistent results. The risk is showing up at a provider's door not knowing who else was in the room and if the provider look anything close to the Photo Shopped images on line. Not to mention that a fair percentage of them merely moved off the street corner charging street corner pricing to the Internet where they doubled or tripled their per service rate.
But the one thing I did notice is that as I entered the provider's phone number into my contacts app, Facebook began matching up that phone number with the provider's Facebook name and suggesting them as potential Facebook friends and the idea was born, rather than contact them thru the Internet ad, seek contact thru Facebook. More over look at their own circle of Facebook friends because many of their Facebook friends are professional providers or used to be professional providers. So I started an altra ego Facebook page and went to work on trying to recruit some UTR contacts for fun and games.
This strategy began to play out not with the immediate Facebook contacts that I know 100% were providers but with their friends of friends. You might be shocked to see how many providers are Facebook friends with other girls who used to work in the industry and are now trying to make a straight life of it. Like anybody else, tragedy befalls them from time to time and they post on Facebook their pleas for $450 for a transmission or money because they fell behind on this month's rent. Perfect candidates for an offer to help financially in exchange for services rendered. Not every offer was met with mutual interest but then again, professional baseball players don't bat 1. 000 either.
The entire 6 month experiment has lead me to conclude it's a lot of work for very little in return. Sure you can hit on someone who had semi retired and you caught them when they really needed a cash infusion but the hours it takes to build up the circle of friends (really its just a numbers game after you get a solid list to work from) and then wait for their own Facebook posts to reflect their dire need of cash. True, they weren't the hard core drug addicts you find on the strolls or in at least half the internet advertisers but the occasional UTR fling was few and far between.
In the final analysis, I hit on some UTR's that I am certain I would have missed otherwise but I cannot devote the time it takes to keep that pipeline open.
