I ran a (legit) shop with my partner in Chicago for several years. Moved here in 2019 and sold the Chicago shop. Will open here (Temecula or nearby) in the spring after things get safer.

So, to your point, this sounds like a situation we used to see from time to time, and I (wearing my monger hat) would sometimes do as well. If the girl wants the owner to believe she gave a non-happy (legit) massage she would want the owner to se her getting a measly $20 tip. They would often collect the $20 tip in front of the front room camera. Just a con job on the boss or to deliberately create some "evidence" of a $20 tip for the camera.

I never went to your shop so I don't really know the reputation. But many girls want to create the illusion they are just collecting small tips.

I think very few places the girl splits the tip.

It's almost always the case that the tip belongs to the girl and she may or may not get a piece of the house fee depending on the shop and the services offered.

The only exception that I've seen firsthand is a Thai place (no longer around) where the girl was giving some of her tips to the boss. But I think there was repaying of some personal debts going on and it was not the standard practice.

I had known the owner for a couple years and would usually chat with her about Thailand for a few minutes after a session. It was during this time when the girl that had just taking care of me came in and handed some money to the boss. In response to my curious look, she just said she " give back".

Previously it had been suggested to me that I should pay this place a visit. Located In a shopping plaza on Oceanside Boulevard and I 5, it's location is very visible as it's right next to a T-Mobile store and the drive-through for a Starbucks. Well, I can't say every place is that way, but all the girls I knew in Chicago would split the door with the owner and keep 100% of the tip. So our door fee was $60 with $30 going to the girl, plus she kept the tip. However California might be a little different. The new law in Cali has largely eliminated 1099 income and replaced it with W2 income. Uber got a carve out with the recent proposition. But. As it stands now a full time worker, working under her name as a massage therapist can't be 1099. Has to be W2. So the shop includes a tip component in the W2 "Wages and Tips" line. Since we haven't owned a shop here in Cali yet can't say for sure, but my partner did work a little but last year and her boss arbitrarily assigned a tip amount on which she was taxed. So. That's a long-winded way of saying perhaps the girls don't want their owner to know the full amount of their tips so that those tips wouldn't be counted by the owner as part of their taxable income. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who is familiar with the common practice in California so that when we open we'll be abiding by common local practice.

Wasn't that a dull report! But, its worth a thought. Give your girl half the tip in private and the other half in front of the owner. You might be saving her some taxes.
