I was paying $900 for a studio apartment a few years ago outside of Boston. A quick google search tells me that average rent for a one bedroom in NC is less than half of what it is here. I've actually looked into salaries in my field down south, and universally they pay almost half of what I get up here. NYC on the other hand has higher rent, and salaries in my field are almost double what they are here. Pay rates vary based on location with any job in relation to the cost of living, so why would providers be any different? I'm sure the cost of your hotel room was much higher here than it would have been back home too. I'd love it if providers all lowered their rates, but I just don't see it happening no matter how much we attempt to organize. I'd love for my rent to go down too, but I don't see that happening either. I'm sure for what I pay in rent up here, I could get a much nicer place in NC. Just as I could get a much higher quality provider for less money in NC. But I'd also be making less money down there, so everything is relative. In the end, I'd still be paying the same percentage of my income for rent and "entertainment".

The issue you're encountering is similar to going on vacation to a country with an unfavorable exchange rate.

Now SW's are a different matter entirely. 99.999% of them are drug addicts. So if you negotiate hard, they will almost always fold (but quality of service declines proportionally in most cases).
