Articles like that are from disgruntled people, you can find all kinds of info. In its infancy it was a fun place where mostly nerds guys that could not get laid put together the site and then some pims got in with those nerds, it was a hobby board created by men for men. At some point some people got but hurt because they got excommed or there were fights online girls vs girls, crews vs crews and so on, There were inquires from some men in a certain colored uniform and yes there was information gathered by an order back in the day. So its like life good people and bad. How you use it is up to you.
As far as OP's statement though, its on par with any other site out there, this hobby has a certain % chance of issues but not anymore or any-less than anywhere else.
