I'm thankful I've never had to deal with last-minute room booking, maybe other brothers here could help with that one. There was a phone app someone wrote about here recently that was designed for that, and I played around with it and it had a lot of potential but seemed to only have hotel signups in a handful of cities I tried, maybe its gotten better.
One approach, make a note of the half dozen or so hotels closest to where the meet is, with their phone number. That way if you need to, you can quickly call and talk to someone at the desk and fast track the process of seeing if they have a last minute cancellation, etc. Without wasting time searching for info or hoping their online booking system is running at top speed.
Another way of looking at it, if the cost difference between cancellable and non-cancellable room is like $20, you might go ahead and book it. Worst case scenario is you lose $20, but it guarantees you don't have to call all over town if a trip to the FC is in order, its just hedging your bets a little with good potential reward and negligible risk. To me the risk of losing the extra money would be worth it compared to the risk of the M&G going well and not having a place to go.
Also even if you do need to cancel, you can always call and give some excuse and maybe they will just refund it straight up. I had a case once where I booked 4 nights of a non-cancellable room, checked in and stayed one night. Something important came up and I needed to change my plans so I just called the front desk and asked if there's anyway I could get partial refund for the remaining three nights. No problem, they refunded the other 75% of the stay. Remember they are in the service industry so customer service is foremost (within reason of course).
The key to doing the above is to be sure and book directly with that hotel, not through a third party like expedia, kayak or whatever, because I believe they've already paid a commission for the booking by that time and it greatly complicates the cancellation process.

Many hotels now have a 24, or 48 hr requirement. I've even seen some in big cities with 72 hrs. Make sure the rate you get can be cancelled on the same day as arrival.

I didn't think about it in my response because I typically don't go for the cancellable option. For purposes of last minute hotel bookings I guess I don't have a lot to offer since I don't do that. I guess if last minute cancellation wasn't an option, I would probably just plan on doing the M&G first but just plan on the first FC trip taking place another day. If the M&G goes well, she's less likely to flake the second time you meet.

First, in the scenario I wrote about in the previous post, Ken as we will call him was my friend and Barbie was his girlfriend. This is not the same friend as the one I just talked about with the Russian wife. He invited his long-term friend, called Ralph, another guy entirely that I barely knew at all into the threesome, but Ken and Ralph had been friends a very long time.
