That's one way to deal with it. I just didn't want to do all that typing on a tiny touch screen each time. I just could not silence the text alert with textnow. But the textfree app did allow the text message alert to be muted.

There is not one generic system wide android setting to mute text arrival sound notifications.

It is determined in the app specific settings. So, in the case of muting that one particular notification, it is up to the design of the app. If the developers of the app didn't account for someone wanting to do that, it can't be done.

I have attached a screenshot showing some of the settings on the Textfree app. You will see one setting for 'Default Text Tone' which I have set to "Silent". Same for 'Default Ring Tone'. TextNow has none of this anywhere in its settings.

The text arrival notification sound on TextNow was long, loud, could not be changed, and very annoying. Since almost all communication in the hobby are through texts, I just ignore the very small percentages where they insist on calls. But there was the occasional wrong number callers. The Google Pixel phone would have every feature of Google's Android Operating System enabled. Different phone manufacturers can add additional features or not allow some features that are part of Android. The only reason I can think of that would make them drop some features is because it would otherwise be a conflict with something they want to add. My Samsung Galaxy A21 does not have the ability to turn off all notifications for an app. Seeing the screenshot of that feature made me look for that feature on my phone in case I overlooked it. I can not find it anywhere.

Once the sound alerts for texts and calls are silenced, at least I have a visual indicator that is a number inside a small circle that overlaps the app icon on the home screen. By using the Textfree app where I can selectively mute the alerts within the app, I still get the visual indicator of unread notifications when I look at my phone. Based on the words on the screenshot, I will assume that all notifications for the app are blocked, including the visual indicator. I have no way to check it out. If my assumption is correct, then it isn't just a matter of personal preference. There would be a distinct loss of functionality. Also, any manufacturer of an Android phone that lacks the ability to block all notifications per app have no choice but to use Textfree instead of Textnow.
