TextNow's advantage is you can change your # any time. Delete it and recreate with another fake email account easily. GV is an arduous process to do so.

People actually want to keep their numbers instead of throwing them away. If you don't use the same number you have to be screened every time. Old customers cannot find you. You can have one GV for each Google account to use for different purposes and an android phone can handle them all. Well, it's not totally free. Sometimes you can get a free sim and activate it with a several dollars plan so as to get a phone number for GV to verify. Then you can keep your GV forever until Google changes its mind.
