Republicans (I am one) supported NAFTA. I did too. It was a way to enable free trade across Canada and Mexico whereby each country did what each does best at the cheapest cost. Capitalism!
The USA Should ALWAYS want lower-skilled jobs done elsewhere and higher skilled jobs done here. Higher skilled jobs pay more!
It's ones own fault if they failed to take advantage of acquiring higher skills so they could get these higher paying jobs. That is called laziness because there were TONS of high skill jobs out there.
Just because you wanted to be the tire checker on the assembly line and get $35 an hour to do it is no reason to hate NAFTA. Mexicans will check that tire for $4 an hour because that's all it's worth.

It was sold by all the good intentions you mentioned, but it was just a way for companies to get cheap labor ie lazy boy, porter cable, and I think whirlpool or Maytag. Porter cable was the most efficient factory in the country at that time. Whirlpool or Maytag has came back since the quality of their product went to shit. Porter cable who used to make a great product is shit now I think they sold. I am all for free trade but on equal levels we should be able to export to these countries as long as its equal. I don't want a tire checker to make 35 an hour but I don't want a country full of service workers only. We have to make some shit here and we should be able to do it at a good price. In 2006, average wage in the US was below $9 an hour. Largest employer in the US, Walmart (retail / service).
