Fellow Mongerers,
If you are unaware of Google Voice you need to educate yourself! This is free service by Google that allows you to port a phone number or assign yourself a new phone number. For our hobby a new phone number is most likely the way to go. This can become your mongering number. You can make and receive calls from this number via your current phone number but have your caller id masked by your GV number. It's actually pretty sweet. I won't get into a tutorial here but if any SM's have questions you can PM me. I'm pretty techie so I'll help as much as I can. It has it's upsides and downsides but it has allowed this monger to finally call the SW's, CL'ers and BP'ers with a real number instead of blocking it and hoping someone picks up. I have included a link with some pro's and con's. Sorry if this is already common knowledge. I didn't really see it addressed anywhere.

Wow. As I sit here in California on a business trip, this sounds like the perfect answer to the conundrum I face; use your personal cell phone for hobby calls on a business trip or go buy a new hobby phone. I will definitely check into this. Thanks Mrrdfun!

mrrd
I have been using this for several months now. It is a great tool, no matter what you use it for. Just a couple high points for those who don't like to read much.
- again. Totally free
- has it's own voice mailbox
- you can tell it not to forward to your phone at inappropriate times
- you can change what number it forwards to at any time. Not locked in
- you can block certain numbers
- a simple web site to configure. No people to call ever
- a lot I'm sure I am missing.
I am also available for pm questions in case mrrd gets flooded. Feeling a little dumb that I didn't think to share this earlier.

mrrd
And the best part, you can change he number as often as you would like.
Thanks for the correction.
I admit that was a bit cocky (my personality brimming over).
Okay, now that we've all kissed and made up, let's get back to the biz at hand. Anyone seen this one? The pics are way out of the league and must be TGTBT right? Intel here would be great!

I had not heard of this, and it sounds very interesting. After reading the article posted, I thought I might point out a couple of aspects which would be most important for board members.
1. Regardless of how many phone lines or "google" numbers on an account, if you make a call directly from any phone, the recipient will see the caller ID from that phone. There are ways to place the call through the Google system, which will mask the ID, that are outlined briefly in the article. Again, all direct phone to phone calls (or texts) will transmit the correct caller ID.
2. All calls and texts involving a number registered in the Google Voice system will be on record in Google's servers. As the article states, Google has a very strict privacy policy that is intended to protect all users from that info being shared. However, I don't believe that any data stored on servers should be considered %100 secure.
Just some food for thought. The article posted is definitely worth reading. If I am mistaken about these points, please correct me.
Well here I sit debating on what to do, when an enormous outpouring of pm's fill my inbox. Thank you very much to the senior, and noob members who have reinspired me. So in a nutshell I will stick around, just for the intel. Now randyman has every right to question someone on something, but when I have a question I find it best to get info thru pm messages. No hard feelings toward him, we are all pretty much the same way as he is. So keep up the good work randyman, it's much appreciated brother. And the person I got the intel from was confedintial. But if anyone is curious pm me. Those who have taken my posts to heart and used my intel know without a doubt I am what I say I am. It's randymans prerogotive to do as he wishes, if he doesn't want my intel thats fine. Chances are though, the intel he got from someone else origianlly came from me, so its a chess match. Noob guys keep posting, keep giving good intel and you will get credibility here soon I assure you. Great intel may get you "senior" status with some of us before you actually do. That has happened recently with a noob who I won't mention the name. On a side note, bigdikdaddy has pmed me and things are worked out there. He is a real stand up dude, though a noob I'm sure he will be right in there with us soon.
Happy hunting brothers

Okay guys. We are here to be friends and to share valuable info to keep us safe and YES, our providers as well. Seniors and the nubies included. If any time there is a questionable report, please just pm the sender and do not call him out on the board. Tacky! Gather your intel first before alledging any dispurging remarks. I do know Assman quite well and value his intel and his friendship. His info has always been good, and if we have points to be made, we work it out. That being said, if anyone does doubt his word or question his info, pm the man and it keep off the bull from the board. I value all your posts as it is a great source on intel; pro and con! Assman is a SENIOR member and for that reason alone, if you do not know this man as I do, should at least garner some respect! Hell, review his posts and that should give you an indication of his experierence. Without his intlel we all would have missed some great ladies at bargin prices. Assman - STAY ON BOARD!!

As a follow up on my report, there are several great regulars I have now due to Assman's intel! In fact, one is here as I speak and will vouch for him!

He brings up a very good point. This only works if you jump through the hoops to mask your caller ID. I don't personally find it all that cumbersome to do so and the benefits definitely outweigh any negatives but to each his own... I'm a big fan of it as I have replaced my home phone, business phone and hobby phone with 3 different GV numbers.
