I feel compelled to provide a brief review of basic economics in a capitalist free market.

1. Supply and Demand. Market prices are essentially set at the point where supply and demand meet. If supply is low (like it currently is in Lansing), and demand remains high, prices are going to increase. If prices rise to a point that they outpace the demand, demand will lower and so will prices. Additionally, if supply increases to catch up to demand, prices will also lower. These forces aren't determined by any individual consumer, but collectively, so even if some aren't willing or able to pay the current price, if enough others are, than that is where the market will stay.

2. Exclusivity. Goods and services are not all created equal, and prices reflect that. All things being equal, I'm sure we'd all love to drive a Ferrari; they are beautiful to look at, powerful, ride smooth, and indicate a certain level of status. But most of us can't afford a Ferrari, and settle for cars like Toyotas, since they are cost efficient, more readily available, and easy to maintain. In fact, part of the appeal of a Ferrari is that fact that it is so exclusive that not many people can have one. The company that makes and sells them could make them available at a lower price, but doing so would diminish its perceived value, and therefore overall demand for their vehicles. Sure, Ferrari is not as big a company as Toyota and don't sell nearly as many cars, but they move enough product to stay in business, so it ultimately doesn't matter to them. The fact that you can't afford one make it more appealing to those who can, and it's savvy business, not price gouging.

Lastly, just as a reminder, woman are not commodities, they are service providers. Unregulated ones at that. They have every right to set their own prices. Think of it like an auto mechanic. Some are more expensive than others, and some do better work and are more reliable than others. These two factors are not always correlated, but usually the free market will work to adjust prices based on quality. If a mechanic does a bad job fixing your vehicle, or charges too much for their services, you will find a different mechanic next time. A poor or overpriced mechanic will either have to constantly find new customers to make up for a lack of repeat patronage, improve their services, or lower their prices. That or they will go out of business. The service providers we discuss on this board are no different.

Bottom line, you can complain about prices all you want, but the only reasonable action you can take is to provide patronage to those who provide quality service for a fair price, and avoid giving your money to those that don't. You can't control other consumers so please stop lashing out at others who are more willing or able to pay higher prices or accept lower quality, because we are all a part of the free market. Have faith that the powerful forces of capitalism will drive quality up or prices down if they are out of alignment, and vote with your wallet.
