Why are people paying up front? I pay the waiter / waitress after the meal. I just picked my car up from the shop and paid after the repairs were done. The one provider I saw so far, I paid after we finished and it wasn't an issue at all.
Are they demanding that you pay upfront? That would seem like a red flag to me and I think I would just walk out and accept my loss on the gas and time spent.

On the other hand though, there is no recourse for the client either, no manager issuing a refund because she had to suddenly leave or the "angry boyfriend" came home (things I read in people's reviews).
I'm just wondering how to avoid getting ripped off and have a little game plan ahead of time. I guess sticking with the well reviewed ones most of the time is the best route and paying on the back end if there aren't any reviews or mixed ones.

Paying up front (before she asks) tells the provider that you trust her and eases her worry about getting stiffed. Now you both can enjoy each other. Once you've developed that trust, it doesn't matter when you pay her, before or after. But I still always pay up front anyway. I only see women with proven track records of legitimate good service, so I've never had a problem. When I arrive, I leave the envelope in plain view. .[/QUOTE]I can definitely understand the hesitance that some mongers might have when they're "TOFTT" and seeing a new provider with no info available. Not much to really say about that. Someone has to take a risk that the other person is going to rip them off in that situation. Either she's willing to accept payment afterwards, or you have to pay up front and hope her "boyfriend" doesn't pop out of the closet 30 seconds later. Or neither party is willing to budge, and you just part ways. That's just the name of the game when you're seeing someone who isn't well established.
But you're right, once you have a good relationship with a provider and there's some mutual trust, it becomes much less of an issue. I only really see one regular provider these days, and I do generally put the money down up front, but that's mainly just to get it out of the way (I know she knows I would never rip her off). But in years past when I was seeing a lot of different providers, even with unknown ones, I only got burnt maybe twice by paying up front. I generally had pretty good instincts about whether a provider was legit or not (or maybe I was just lucky, LOL).
