Tonights Journal Inquirer had their first story about Alpha. It basicly said the same thing as the Courants story this morning. The part that gets me, is the Chief of the Hartford PD saying " This isn't just about the prostitutes, It's also about the johns who created the demand, and we want to hold everyone involved responsible." "This is just the start of many more arrests." It sounds like this guy is running for office!

As most of us already know, HPD arrested and the Hartford Courant published the names of the clients that were present when the Alpha club was "raided". I would like to express my sympathy to those persons and their families. The past few months must have been difficult and the coming months I am sure will be difficult. I know that it could just have easily been me there that day. Hang in there and let us know if you need any help.

Mark Pawlina is the interim acting chief of the HPD. In a sense he is running for office, to convince the mayor that he should be given the job on a permanent basis. The questions about the federal statute of limitations (10years) lead to another question, is prostitution a federal offence in the first place? If so, how are the brothels in Nevada considered legal? I believe the ones that have been closed or siezed by the federal government were done so for tax/money laundering reasons, not prostitution per se. If only the owners of Alpha had done some renovation work for Gov. Rowland they could still be in business.
Let's not forget, Hartford has a nice new convention center slated to open in about a year or so. This could be the start of the city cracking down to clean things up.
Regarding the Feds and Alpha methinks that if someone crossed a state line to go the the Alpha for sex then that could trigger a federal statute. Of course they'd have to prove that in federal court with higher standards of evidence and most likely it would be difficult to pin you down. I wonder though if the feds could legally impound the vehicle you went there in under RICO? If they had the license number then that could be tricky for you since you'd have to prove the vehicle was innocent in order to get it back. Can we get testimonials from people that went to Alpha and got a massage without sex? Are there any?
I dont know how many of the posters posting messages with legal opinion are actually lawyers, but I am. Let me clarify a couple if things.
There may indeed be serious and heavy harassment by LE of folks who are listed in the ALPHAs inventory of credit card records. However, unless the monger being quesitoned is unbeleivably dumb, no charges will stick and it is highly unlikely any will be filed.
Lets assume the worst case scenario - LE has 26 credit card receipts from a Mr. John D Luvdozer residing at 15 mockingbird lane. All of the receipts are form the last year so there are no statute of limitations problems. Lets aslo assume that they find 3 girls who are willing to testify that they serviced Mr. Luvdozer on 20 of those 25 occasions and that we exchanged money for sex. LE offers the girls plea bargains to get testimony against me.
This would be about as bad as it could get and this is NOT enough to sustain charges beyond a preliminary hearing. The case is so bad that it would never be filed unless the cops were trying to pressure me with public humiliation on this issue to get me to testify about some other non-related crime. Since I am not married and do not live in Hartford i could care less.
The reason that this is not enough to charge Mr Luvdozer is because the girls are his co-conspiritors and their testimony must be corroborated by some physical evidence or testimony from someone else not involved in the crime. Testimony from other Alpha employees wont help because they are all co-conspiritors according to the LE theory. credit card receipt only proves that I paid for SOMETHING. If I claim that I paid for a massage, no one can prove differently.
I could have gone to Alpha every single day and paid by credit card - I cannot be convicted of any crime. Many posters have noted the fact that the mongers who were arrested were present during the sting. Unless the cops actually caught them midstroke, it will be quite difficult to secure a conviction. If the cops try to charge Mr Luvdozer under an ordinance about patronizing a house of prostitution, all he has to say is that it wasnt a brothel when he was there. LE has the burden of proving it was.
This leads to a second issue which I have discussed in several posts. People often ask, "can i be arrested for that?" My answer is usually '" you can be arrested for ANYthing if the cops have a hard on for you" It sounds like they will start hassling people whose names appear on these credit card receipts. It is theoretically possible that they might try arresting someone to shake some testimony loose. However, as long as he keeps his mouth shut and lets his lawyer work, charges will be dismissed quickly because nothing can sustain them.
Its like being pulled over with a SW in your car before you have done anything. Technically, the cop has no business busting either one of you because he has witnessed no crime. However, cops often will bust someone based on evidence that should not be sufficient to warrent charges. Particularly in the arena of prostitution, the count on the guy's strong desire to keep his activities secret. Guys who are that frightened of being arrested often talk too much and end up giving evidence against themselves - then you are screwed.
Be polite and be quiet.
If anyone reading this board is harrased by LE because of records at Alpha, just deny deny deny. Cops WILL lie to you and tell you that they have evidence that they dont really have and that they are going to file charges that they arent really going to file. Just say " i committed no crimes and I witnessed no crimes" If they keep pushing tell them that becaise of their aggressive posture, you feel more comfortable talking to a lawyer before answering anymore questions. After that, dont say a damn thing.
As a fellow lawyer, I must respectfully disagree with Luvdozer's post. The girls would not be a customer's co-conspirators, b/c they and the customer would have committed entirely separate crimes: the girls would have committed prostitution, a class A misdemeanor (Connecticut General Stats. 53a-82), while the customer would have patronized a prostitute (Connecticut General Stats. 53a-83). In order for someone to be your "co-conspirator" the two (or more) of you have to have conspired to commit the same crime -- e.g., two people plan a bank robbery. In the bank robbery scenario, one could not be convicted of robbery solely on the testimony of the person with whom you planned the robbery.
So while it is true that one cannot be convicted solely based on the testimony of a co-conspirator, that does not apply to the Alpha scenario -- one could, in theory at least, be convicted based solely on the testimony of one of the girls.

I made comment by pm to another monger, and I feel its important to say that in these times we can trust very, very little. While our brothers still warm corpses are being dragged around in the streets of Iraq, our same gov't wishes to drag good citizens through our own streets. The men arrested commited no crime against an individual, and like most "so-called johns", 99% of the time, its a first time misdeameanor.
These are strange times...weird times. We should all respond appropriately. Without a doubt, yet another reason to vote some of these apes and overzealous cretans out of office. Their puritanical priorities do not match with the priorities of our country and new millenium, post-puritanical world. Hypocrites.
In my excitement over the law-talk, I forgot to mention a suprisingly pleasant recent trip to the Gold Club. Usually, the most I ever get (or expect to get) there is a nice grind in the VIP area and lots of watered-down drinks.

re your post on gold club, i too was a regular a year back or so, i make weekly visit to the club on weekends, but haven't been there lately since i've discovered Teddies and the Keystone down in bridgeport. i too had some pleasant experiences but not to that extend. sucking on girls' tits during lapdances, fingerying the puss, etc. but never any full action as you mentioned. vip room and a few lap dances could rank up to $$

I was wondering if anyone has heard of a user here Jenny Jones?
