I'd say that, under most circumstances, it won't be broadcasting its location to the cell towers you're passing by if it's "off", but like most electronics these days, "off" really means "standby. " How much an issue that is depends on the hardware and how much you care. The phone also likely has an internal log of power events, and would tell someone who knew how to ask if it had been turned off or it ran out of juice.

Also, if you were, say, visiting your ex-gf's place for some, and you turned off your phone a mile away each time, but you had approached it from three or four different directions, your direction of travel between cell towers (before you turned it off) drawn on a map all pointing towards her address might be enough to convince most angry women that you were stepping out.

But you're right, it's almost certain not to ring while you're in the middle of something!

There are marketing tools that allow businesses to geofence their location and gather people's information within that area and drill down using specific criteria, like collecting only those information that search for specific services or websites withing that geolocation. One in particular is El Toro. They can track your phone's IP back to your info and then data mine and produce a wealth of data on an individual. We use it around competitor's businesses and anyone who goes to those locations. We get number of visits, client addresses, phone numbers, etc. The amount of data available for cheap is extraordinary. I don't see an AMP going to this much work to send you a mailer when they are essentially turning tricks. That's the last thing that you want to market to someone's home address.

Found an interesting article on masking and deleting your location history on your phones. This is only native to your phone and will not delete the "pings" that cell towers collect and store for months. The shop on Beach by Univ blvd has been getting more fun with every visit. Typical older Chinese but I've managed to have some extra fun there. The shop is set back off the road and not too easy to spot behind the Arby's. I like that.

When you turn on Airplane Mode, you're politely asking your phone to not talk to cell towers and WiFi. It will probably even honor that request!

But, GPS isn't a two-way "radio" (unlike cell and Wifi, which really are just that). It's a passive receiver-only system that tells your phone where it is based on signals it gets. What the phone does with that info after it gets it is another matter. Turning Location Services (and the like) off means that it won't go about telling everyone else where you are all the time, but I'm dubious that that information isn't stored locally on the phone, even if you ask it not to be, or you ask it to forget where it's been. Every time someone's gone digging, they've found that crap getting stored somewhere.

Removing the battery is the only way to be mostly sure its not recording anything.

I will mention that all of this only matters if someone has a reason to go looking and can pay someone clever enough to find it. I would say that most AMP clients don't have the net worth for it to matter, but there was a case recently that got some publicity that kinda goes against that idea.

If you look at all of my posts over the years, you'll see what I mean.

Engaging in this hobby is risky in a number of different ways, and I just think that everyone should be aware of which risks, exactly, they're taking. That way they can decide for themselves if they think the reward is worth the risk. Not understanding the realities of the risks is not a good thing, as I see it, which is why I address the details here, so other mongers can make an informed decision.

Cost have gone up because there those out there paying more than what is the norm. And they think that is what the local economy will now support and that is what they are asking for.
