Please do not take what I am about to say as whining, complaining, or as something that was in any way meant to sound antagonistic. I am new to this board, and new to this particular realm of the adult industry, but in reading old (still recent enough to be relevant) posts I stumbled upon one that was worth commenting on. The bottom line is that there are only so many appointments a girl can take in a week, and that number varies, even, from girl to girl. You have to balance the number of appointments you take / what your charge / your expenses effectively, and sometimes business is slow or unexpected expenses crop up. Don't get me wrong, we get paid handsomely for what we do, but not as handsomely as it would seem at first glance.
For those of you who manage or own a business, as I am sure many of you do, the validity of what I am about to lay out will be apparent.
As with all things, we girls have expenses expressly associated with what we do. Some of us utilize subscription based screening services. Some of us take out very expensive advertisements on other boards. I'd wager most of us have a separate phone line for making and taking calls. Some of us buy outfits / lingerie, have a secure incall location separate from our residences for the sake of safety / discretion etc. I would hope we are spending money on things such as condoms, additional hygiene products, and regular testing as well. Some of us have legal counsel on retainer. Some girls operate with very little overhead, it is true. Some may even do so with an outstanding quality of service, security, safety etc. It is not for me to say one way or the other. Still, as with any business, there are expenses involved. That $175 an hour gets eaten into by them.
Then you have to consider the time spent on an appointment above and beyond the time actually spent WITH a client. Screening takes time. Some girls may only see one out of every three or four clients they screen. That is time consuming, but I think most of you would agree, necessary. There is a reason that girl didn't see the other clients, right? Hygiene takes time. I am actively working on inventing a Jetson's-esque device that allows me to jump in and be showered, shaved, made-up, hair styled, and dressed within a couple of minutes (and I will be a millionaire when I succeed!) but until then, that is more time poured into our appointment. If a girl has her nails done, hair cut, etc on a weekly basis, that takes time. If it is an outcall, you also have the travel time. All in all, your one hour appointment with a girl may actually take as much as three hours to prepare for! That is four hours poured into a single hour appointment. This is why some girls choose not to offer half-hour appointments. This isn't even taking flakes and no-shows into the equation. This isn't even taking all of the five minute calls we may take with no appointment booked into the equation. This is just the time and resources we spent on you, personally.
I did a bit of quick math. For a girl that does this full time, with no other job, if you estimate that an hour long appointment requires three hours of time spent arranging / preparing / traveling / etc, bringing the total to four hours for every hour, a girl who puts in a "full-time" 40 hour week. 50 weeks a year, charging $175 / hr will gross about 87k a year *before* expenses. That business model presents a picture a little different from what I think some folks may have in their minds.
