I knew joe when he was the bartender at the Plaza. If you get to know him he will treat you better. But you have to take the time to talk with him first before letting any of the girls jump you and ask you to buy them a drink. He's always treated me reasonably well and (I don't know whether this is good or bad since I only come to Baltimore 4 or 5 times a year) knows me by my first name. He always treats me OK. Of course I always make it a point to tip the bartenders. (I drink mixed drinks, and after the $8 - $10 charge, I tip them a buck and drink slowly...and I stop at the Midway as I bounce between clubs where the drinks are more reasonable.) It just shows that you will do well to get to know the bartenders better than the girls. It's true that bartenders come and go, but the dancers come and go much more quickly.

There used to be 3 bartenders on the Block named Joe. I think the one you are referring to is nicknamed Jewel Box Joe. He is really a nice guy. I tip $2. 00 for a beer and he was never pushy. I haven't seen him in a while, though. I'm a daytime, weekday person. After getting to know you, he gives excellent references.

You just have to realize that a bartender who wears a (somewhat obvious) cross to work as a bartender on the block probably doesn't fully approve of what goes on on the block even though he works there. The Joe that is still working somewhere (can't remember which bar, might have been Circus), who used to work at the Plaza before it burnt down, worked at the downstairs Jewel Box before he worked at the Plaza. In between Jewel Box & Plaza he worked a couple of the other places, probably filling in temporarily. When he was at the Jewel Box I'd tip him, and he generally made sure the girls I found interesting knew I was "OK", or suggested alternates if the girl that caught my eye hadn't yet learned the way of The Bottle. When he was at the Plaza I was visiting less frequently, so he only sortof recognized me, but still he tried to make sure the girls kept this customer happy.

I get to the block maybe 4 or 5 times a year. The Joe (who has to at least be in his 60's) who bar tended at the Plaza most evenings now bar tends most evenings at the Circus. The other Joe (probably in his 40's) tends bar at the downstairs Jewel box most evenings.

Hi guys, have read the forum for awhile but this is my first post. I see the Baltimore casino is opening in late August and seems to be close to the Block. I'm wondering if this place may have the potential to turn into something like what happens in Vegas where we have some "casino girls" working late at night. Thinking with the club being in the city and the Block not far away that it may have potential to draw some girls to the bars seeking business. Anyone else have any thoughts on this.

See some escort or BP reports for the occasional casino provider. At the moment casinos are not fertile ground for this activity. Not that it can't or won't be but isn't now. Besides, with all that security and all those cameras I would rather take my chances elsewhere. Even nice hotels don't have very inch covered and recorded like casinos. Just ask Ray Rice.

I think a great reality show would be just filming the people at that casino on a Friday after paychecks come out. The day social security checks come out too. I was down hanging out at the block this past weekend. I think it might have been Sunday. Anyway, about 1 or 130, I was getting ready to leave the Red Room, I was at the top of the stairs just about ready to go out and I heard a bang (only it sounded more like a cross between a bang and a very loud whoosh). Bless the doorman, he told me to say inside for a few minutes and he confirmed my suspicion that it was in deed a gunshot. Soo. I backed down the stairs so that my head was just about level with the street. About 5 minutes later, about 30 of baltimore's finest were there on the block, and the doorman told me it was ok to come out. I went to the Midway and got a coke. About 5 minutes there and the guy at the door said he saw a guy walk out of one of the clubs across the street who looked like he had been shot in the side. Does anybody know anything else about what happened?

Funny you should post this, One Man.

I was hanging down there one night about a month or two back, making the rounds from place to place to see the night's line-ups. There was a guy with blood streaming down his head stumbling outside on the sidewalk with a couple guys screaming at him (maybe these were the same guys that caused the blood, don't know, wasn't going to ask), so I just side-stepped him like a matador and went into the closest bar (which was Circus) to escape the chaos and the descending police flooding the area.

Got a beer and started talking to Joe the bartender about what the gloomy future holds for the Block. It was pretty dead in there at the time, and so we got to talking, and to sum it up basically he says with all the crazy violence that just gets worse and worse with each passing year, he predicts that within 5 years it will all be gone (granted he is a bit cranky, but he sees this shit day after day), unless he said, there's a really bad shooting, and then much sooner.

I have a feeling that he might be on to something though. A damn good thing could be gone in a couple of years, so it might be a good idea to get down there and enjoy the seediness and scum that only the Block can deliver.

God I love that place.

No way. The old days were crazier and far more thugish. That is if thugs included E Bawlmer 'and' SW Bawlmer white boys. I can't even begin to remember all the things I saw on the block since my first visit a few months before Reagan took office for the first time. I mean I really don't even know where to start. Pretty much anything went back then and it was much like the Victorian red light district.

Even as late as the early 2000's I saw every vice known to man take place in front of me at one time or another.

By the time OMalley took office as mayor and said something to the close to "I hope the block would just wither and die" we saw the writing on the wall.

It's a shame. The block could be a world class tourist attraction if the city had decided to treat it that way way back when. Getting nostalgic. I'll have to get down there again soon. Even a bad block is better than no block.

There are some hard core life long addicts down on the block. I took my first trip down to the block over 10 years ago. Never met anyone that I knew of on drugs until I visited he Block. To this day I'll still run into some of the same girls now that I've seen over 10 years ago down on the Block still struggling with the same addiction.

Some of the better clubs do a better job at limiting the amount of nodding off at the bar now a days though. Nodding off at the bar use to be normal.

About 20 years ago I got to know one block girl very well, she told me that absolutely every girl in her bar used heroin and cocaine. Perhaps the drugs of choice have evolved since then, but many of the girls remain heavy users.

We've seen various news and Hollywood shows where girls are tricked or forced into being prostitutes and then they start using drugs. I believe that it is typically the reverse order: girls started with drugs and then went to stripping and prostitution to support their drug habbit.

Was in last night, first time. Interesting system. BYOB, brought a small Jack, that's about just right. 15 $ for the "membership" for one yrear (required). 25 $ entrance fee to get in, this time and every time in the future. The membership is good for one year. Once inside you get a red cup for your drink and a bag for the bottle, it stays in the bag all night. The girls are easily 8-9, good for a strip club. However, since the clients are almost all regulars, they are a bit high-strung and don't get a lot of traffic. Both I talked to complained they were running low on business that night, both poured out long stories of needing support, almost felt for them. Good looking though and more sophisticated than at other low end clubs. One of them told me she "dated" so that would have been easy but her long personal story made it less compelling. The other one had issues with grandmother and "I'm in the hole" stories and didn't date (although seemed to be thinking about it). Bottom line, it's different and worth trying for a different experience. If you like extended conversations with dancers in a low key, more private environment. Recommended.

A girl named "Megan" who (at least a couple of months ago) worked at the Circus talked with me about a year ago when I was just hanging out in the Midway. (She was getting ready to go to work.) She told me a story (and I think I believe / believed her) that at one point she was maybe a freshman in college and her BF at the time got her hooked on pills (Percocet or Oxycontin probably). It was down hill from there until she (relatively quickly) ended up on heroin (a much cheaper drug). At that point in time we still could have fun (not for TO, but just going from a nice "regular" bar on the block.) The last time I saw her her breasts were badly scarred and not at all fun to play with. (They were painful / tender to the touch for her as well.) She tried to tell me a story about a bad accident, but I think the accident was a dirty needle ending up in her breasts too many times.
