Yup you got it right. That's exactly what's going on.

There are countless paid operatives and "consultants" out there, typically working from home, who are doing that kind of thing on behalf of special interest groups with religious / political agendas. These groups work in different to manipulate public opinion by artificially creating "data". You've possibly identified one of those ways. This synthetic "data" is then used to pressure legislators to change laws in ways that will benefit the group's agenda.

The public's opinions on hot button issues like abortion, marijuana legalization, immigration, foreign policy, etc, etc are all ripe targets to be manipulated by these groups.

I'm not very tech savvy, so please excuse me. I understand the privacy concerns and hence the argument for using burner phones. They have 808 area code numbers too. Load the app on your phone and you don't need to buy a separate burner phone. If you need to keep the app hidden, then place it in a folder with other apps to make it less obvious. I have used my burner number for years even before COVID.
