The area around Grove St. Dried up when they closed down, and then tore down, the block that had the Montauk theater on it. It wasn't because that was gone. It had been closed for a few years. It was because behind the theater was the Hotel Passaic where the county put up all the welfare folks and the "homeless' they managed to get off the street. Most of the hookers lived in that building, along with their pimps and drug dealers. I went in there once and vowed never again! .

My understanding is that after that area dried up, the girls all went to Paterson or Elizabeth. I ran into a couple of the girls from Passaic up at the King's Inn hotel on rt46 Wayne (which is where they moved a lot of the folks that lived in the Hotel Passaic), and that's what one of the girls told me.

I used to cruise through Passaic even after I moved away but really, after the Hotel Passaic closed down I hadn't seen much of anything there. Not only did the Grove St. / Henry St. Area dry up but so did the Passaic Ave stroll between 8th St and Market St. , the Myrtle & Broadway area, the Monroe St. Stroll between 4th St & Market St. , and the Howe Ave stroll all dried up as well. In part that was due to the various low-income places in that area going away (2 on Howe Ave closed, one just off of Passaic burned down, a couple of off Monroe were shut down pending demolition which still hasn't happened years later), and in part due to increased police presence in all those areas.

Passaic used to be a great place to go for sex - 5 adult books stores and 2 adult theaters (Montauk and the Capital) all in about a 5-10 block radius. Now, it's mostly just the massage parlors. I know of about 8 Asian places and, if they are still there. It's been a while - 2 Russian / Polish spread throughout the city.
