Beside the added cost of gas and tolls, there is also the issue of audit trail from the toll, which for some people is a problem. Even you don't mind the drive, the cost and the toll audit trail you are still looking at 2 hours of driving alone (round trip). For some people, they just can't sneak off that long. This is how they can get away with the high fee. Supply and demand.

Perhaps we have a terminology question here. To start with, I assume we are only talking about people who purport to be massage therapists. (That's what DMichaels is referring to by "legit places", I assume.) In that group, I've worked with Licensed as well as unlicensed Massage Therapists. I've had amazing, therapeutic, massages from unlicensed people. In many cases there are people had training and experience in other countries, and therefore, are well-qualified to provide an excellent massage. The fact that they are missing a license is more related to our own government paperwork than any test of skill. Likewise, I've had mediocre massages from licensed MTs, can't offer a reason. Perhaps attitude, strength. I know a woman who was a doctor (Radiologist) in China. Here, she's a tech in a hospital. Just did not want to go through the process to become a doctor here. Another was a lawyer in China. Another was a high school teacher. Certificates, licenses, and language skills don't always tell the complete story.
