Been cruising laurel the past few days, and the last time or two I was here.

Last year seen one hanging around close to the Budget Inn but was unable to go back. She was tall, slim had shoulder lgth black hair. 2 years ago not far from there they broke up a hispanic brothel. I've come across one other interesting piece, a court case:

Obviously, the ladies were busted by Leo. However, this leads me to my next question: if law enforcement knew as early as '83 that the place was a brothel, how did it manage to stay open and survive until '97? I'm assuming the local sherriff's office was bought off?

Another note: author Barry Gifford made a small mention of Ma Shumate's place (only a couple of sentences) based on a conversation he had with a rock star. The rock star told him that Ma Shumate was still alive but retired (this was published in '03).

Would love to hear some thoughts from those of you in the know on this stuff.

I visited there many times during 94, 95 and 96. Ma Shoemake or Shumate (not for sure) handed it down to her daughter who I think was named Margaret when Ma died. Margaret died in (if I got the name right) in either 94 or 95 but Cindy was running the place. I came to know Cindy and her husband pretty good and they are great people. I left Meridian in 96 and it was after the next sheriff got elected who's name is Sollie I think closed the place down. Not for sure about this but I heard Cindy had been sick and lives in the Newton area.
Club Capri was great. Never will forget a gal I "met with" by the name of Nila.
All the girls there were special and it wasn't expensive.

I heard early last year that at the intersection of I 20 and where you you exit to go by the old place was a motel and you could ask around there and a fellow would give you info. I never checked it out. I'm from 60 miles below there and I go thru Meridian quite a bit. Maybe next trip I can find out something. New sheriff at that time shut it down. No telling how many times he had been there.

I drove by Ma's old place about a year ago. It was still there then, but they had taken the fences down.

I would be surprised if it had grown up to be unrecognizable since then.

We may be talking about two different locations though.

The one I am talking about is the last one that was in operation just before it was closed. The bar was in one building, then you went out back through an outside yard that had a wooden privacy fence to get to the "hotel". It was set back just a little more from the road, and was located about 100 feet to the right of the bar building.
