Cops put sting on Hub brothels: Flesh biz probed for potential sex slaves

Undercover cops have burst through the doors of backstreet brothels in East Boston and Brighton, rounding up dozens of suspected pimps and hookers and probing whether illegal immigrants were forced to work as sex slaves.

Detectives on Operation Dial-a-Date, active since the middle of last year, are hunting for links to organized crime outfits that bring women into the country through drug routes and force them into the city’s sex trade, said Detective Sgt. Kelley O’Connell, who overseas the Boston Area Human Trafficking Task Force.



“We’re a poor city,” O’Connell said. “It’s very easy to just blend in. That’s a problem we see in different trafficking cases. It’s a hidden business operation that goes unnoticed. It just blends in with everyday business.

“We’re working with different agencies to see if it rises to the level of organized crime,” O’Connell said. “It’s a matter of identifying trends. Are we seeing the same individuals? There have been instances where we’re seeing that.”

In East Boston, Operation Dial-a-Date has shuttered five brothels and netted 21 arrests, while an ongoing push in Brighton has brought in 67 accused hookers, pimps and johns. The number of backstreet bordellos is greater than cops expected to find.

In residential triple-deckers on Saratoga, Bennington and Meridian streets, they found a thriving flesh trade where women were offered for anything-goes sex romps with undercover cops for $30.

In separate brothels all run by Colombian men, police seized time clocks, spiral-bound notebooks, envelopes stuffed with cash, marbles or poker chips used as payment tokens, and plastic business cards that had been distributed around Maverick Square as ads.

Of five recent brothel arrests, three of the women were from Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. Another was from Georgia. Carol Gomez, director of the Boston-based Trafficking Victims Outreach Services Network/Mathahari-Eye of the Day, said operations are capable of rapidly shuttling women across the country from brothel to brothel. In East Boston, with its large, poor immigrant population, brothel owners are able to keep a low profile.

“It’s easier to market the women to their own linguistic network vs. maybe going into the mainstream where they might not know who to trust or who might be an undercover cop,” Gomez said. “It’s not uncommon even within the Spanish-speaking community for the rings to remain within a trusted circle.”

O’Connell said police are trying to break into that network and gain the women’s trust.

“The whole concept is to be able to identify a true trafficking victim,” she said. “First what we have to do is get them to speak to law enforcement. . . . Here you’re locking them up for a crime, so right away they’re under police arrest. . . . What we at the task force are trying to do is break that barrier and gain their trust.”

But Gomez said since the women are kept locked away and their legal status in the United States is often questionable, they rarely run to police or service organizations that can help them escape their captors.

“The women are often very isolated and unable to reach out for help or seek services,” she said.

Have found nothing worth while and even struck out at a recent trip to Tampa.

As a veteran of the Combat Zone peepshows who had his first sexual experience there at about 15 years old (which today they call rape) I sympathize with you.

Leather and Lace sucks bad. All you can do there is watch a girl VIA VIDEO CAMERA for twice the price of a BJ or get blown by a guy through a gloryhole..................NO THANKS on both counts.

There were some peepshows in Connecticut a few years ago in some of the shithole inner cities down there. Maybe check their board....or just go to Cheaters in Providence instead.

Cheaters is as "hands on" as it gets. A bit more expensive than the old peep shows I remember from the zone but there's no glass....

In that place I first used to go to which was about four doors up from the Naked I (it was next to the bookstore next to the Pilgrim Theater *shudder* and Boston Bunnies) they had it set up so that you didn't put money in a machine you just passed it to the girl through a hole under the glass. If you paid a little extra and they liked (or trusted) you, you could either put your pud through the same hole or they would remove the plexiglass and either work you that way or one of you hopped into the other side. Some of the girls would just offer "services" to you as you wandered toward a peep booth and you'd go into one of the larger ones near the girls dressing room.

I remember (like an idiot) turning down 15-20 dollar BJ's because most of the girls would do it for 10. Now at somewhere like Cheaters it's around 145-195 for the booth time(35), the cover for the nude room(10) and the girl(100-150).

The last semi-decent peep show place was the original Liberty book store a block further up on the left side of Washington st. I still have one of their dollar tokens.
On one side there's a topless woman and it says "heads I win".
On the other side is her ass and it says "tails you lose".


You, me and everyone else who remembers the Zone will never see someplace like that again.:(

I have been on a quest to identify the last remaining peeps in the country. Liberty Bookstore II was great (was there a "LB I"?) and from everything I can tell the last in New England (Leather and Lace is a joke and doesn't count). I traveled coast-to-coast and looked high and low for peeps. There are 2 remaining in NYC, 1 in Penn, a couple in NY (outside of the city) but as far as I can tell none anywhere else in the Northeast.

Some good ones in California and New Mexico, but if there really *are* peeps remaining in CT, I would LOVE to know.

The Zona Norte in Tijuana and King's Cross in Sydney OZ are probably the closest I have come to the old Combat Zone -- certainly there is nothing I have ever seen that compares anywhere else in the U.S. As much as I love this country, it pains me to see the lose of culture in the name of gentrification and bolstering the power of incumbent douche bags like Mumbles.

I don't know why you guys are dissing that place. I used to go there all the time and there were couples where the woman would get all freaky with gangbangs and stuff. That place was the balls. Of course you had to dodge like 100 gay dudes trying to glom up on you and they were having orgies in the corners like 40 naked dudes or more at a time and it smelled like crap but otherwise it was a blast! Leather and Lace used to be good, many moons ago. I used to go to this one "mom" there who wore a business suit, with nice undies. On my way to work at 9am. What a dirty little girl she was for a mere $20 plus the "booth" charge.

I was at the Block in Baltimore about 5 years ago, and that place was hopping - dozens of strip and lap dance places, plenty of back room action. Nothing on the street like the Zone used to be in its heyday, but the Block brought me back some sweet memories. I hope it's still there.

In addition to the Glass Slipper, the last remaining piece of the Combat Zone should be Aga's Highland Tap -- since its been around since the 1940s.

But what's up with that place??? I have never had the guts or impulse to go in -- sounds like it sucks. But I would probably go just for the sake of nostalgia. Anyone have any stories about that place? Been lately?

Remember the World Famous 2 O'Clock Lounge that was three strip joints in one. The seventies were memorable.

Ahhh fuck, I'd blocked that out of my memories for the last 20 years....lol.

I remember in the original Liberty Bookstore they had that. You'd go in and she'd be dancing on the rotating carousel but you could see all the other guys faces pressed up to the glass as they rubbed one out. I used to stand way back in the booth so I couldn't see them and the girls would press up against the glass to make sure someone was in there. Man those old pervs made some really fucked up looking O-faces.

And when you were in a private show they always wanted you to pick up the phone.....riiiiiiiight, like I'm going to press that against my face after 300 guys have wacked off in there that day. I developed a system of hand signals to tell them what kind of show I wanted.

That place was like the theater in Escape From New York only with hundreds of gays, no lights and a heaping helping of Ultraviolence.
Aside from porno movies there were gay orgies and gang rape, people drinking, smoking weed and shooting heroin in the seats, drug dealers on the stairs to the bathroom, which was like descending into hell (after a few nightmarish encounters down there I just pissed on the floor from my seat) and vietnamese transsexuals with what looked like great tits offering head for 20 bucks, probabaly to pay for their chopacockoff operation. It was only 5 then 6 bucks to stay in there from 9 am to 3 (or was it 5?) am, making it one big homeless orgy, party shelter. I used to only go there after one too many at the Naked I so I could sober up enough to monger safely.

When the Zone needed an enema, the Pilgrim Theater is where they put the hose.;)
