The madam of the Miami Compan*ions escort ser*vice, who faced a year in prison for helping run a massive prostitution agency, today received a one-day prison sentence for her crime.

The government had argued for a 12-month-plus-one-day prison sentence for Miami Companions co-owner Laurie Carr. But the judge concluded that prison was not the best place for the single mother. Carr, dressed in a form-fitting solid black dress today, pleaded for leniency, and said she's a changed woman.

'The lifestyle that I led in my past was absolutely despicable, ' Carr said at her sentencing hearing, maintaining that she had changed even before her arrest last summer. 'The most important thing to me is my son and taking care of him. '

She later added, 'I would just ask for mercy and grace. '

USA District Court Judge Arthur Tarnow responded:

'I'm not big on mercy and grace, but I do try to follow the law. '

In the end, Tarnow concluded that a one-day prison sentence, followed by two-years of supervised release, was an appropriate punishment for Carr.

He issued the sentence after Carr's lawyer, Oscar Rodriguez, argued that Carr's cooperation in the case was substantial. He said she needs to be free to raise her child and improve her life.

Rodriguez also argued in court that Carr, who makes $2, 600 a month as a ticket broker in South Florida, has been receiving 'very little' child support from her ex-husband and co-defendant, Gregory Carr. He said that it wasn't until a recent court order that Gregory Carr started paying child support.

Gregory Carr, the accused mastermind of the escort service who received a 14-month prison sentence last month for his role, was in court today for his ex-wife's sentencing. His lawyer, Tampa attorney Paul DeCailly, strongly refuted the claims that his client did not pay child support.

'Greg never missed a payment since they've been separated, never, ' DeCailly said, adding that his client has paycheck stubs to prove it. He said that Gregg Carr had with him in court today paycheck stubs showing that $70-74 per week were taken out for child support.

As for Laurie Carr getting a lighter sentence than Gregory Carr, DeCailly said:

'It's bittersweet. From a father's point of view, this is the best thing that could happen for his son, ' DeCailly said. 'Now (the child) doesn't have to watch both is mother and father go to jail. '

Laurie and Gregory Carr were among five people indicted last summer on charges they ran what the government had dubbed one of the largest sex rings in the country, charging up to $500 an hour for sex to roughly 30, 000 clients nationwide.

The case netted guilty pleas from all five defendants, including office manager Michelle Matarazzo, who also received a one-day prison sentence today for her role. She operated the phones and booking appointments for the escorts and johns. The government was pushing for a 7-month pri*son sen*tence in exchange for her co*op*eration, but Tarnow gave her one day instead.

An*oth*er female defen*dant who was spared a prison sentence was Nayubet Swaso, a for*mer porn star and call girl who was the op*erations man*ag*er at call centers in Panama and Costa Rica. At her sentencing May 6, Tarnow concluded that pri*son was not the right place for Swaso, who had twice been abandoned as a child. In*stead, Tarnow gave her two years of super*vised re*lease.

The fifth defendant is Gregory Carr's live-in girlfriend, Fabiola Con*treras, a for*mer Miami Compan*ions escort known as Antonella who quit the busi*ness to date Carr. She pleaded guilty last month to help*ing hire il*le*gal I'm*migrants to work for Miami Compan*ions. She faces up to 6 months in prison.

I just returned from a trip to Philadelphia and all I can say is WOW! It has everything a monger can want or need. If you like SW's it has a street the call the K. Imagine BHA from Dudley st all the way to Talbot Ave. Now put the overhead track from the old Washington st orange line above it. It gives it that dark seedy feel. She continues to stay in touch regularly so I'm still going to keep trying.
