I read an article in the AJC a while back that examined the misapplication of the sex offender statute in Ga. One case was a woman who was caught by a cop giving her bf a bj in the backseat of a car while she was a teenager. She's been classified as a sex offender ever since. She has to live with the housing restrictions, the limitations on her career, and constant harassment from our good citizens when they discover that a sex offender is living in the neighborhood. This statute is just one in the long list of laws that started with the kernal of a legitimate idea and has been warped out of proportion by prosecutors and courts. You have to realize that it's a cop's JOB to arrest people under the highest possible charges and it's a DA's JOB to make those charges stick. And no judge in the world wants to run for election with a "weak track record on sex offenders." If you get arrested on a sex-related charge in GA, you'd better keep you mouth shut and get a lawyer.
