My own practice. I always only book last minute using a hotel app after I have confirmed FC trip plans with a trusted previously tested SB or directly after closing the deal with a pot who agrees to the trip while we are in person together.

For example, health plan premiums can be very different for a single guy vs. A married guy with family. One guy rents an apartment but puts 12% of his gross monthly into a 401 k, while another guy has a mortgage but puts 6% of his gross into 401 k and 6% toward early mortgage pay down (there is no general agreement among finance experts on whether early mortgage principal pay down with a guaranteed savings of maybe 4% mortgage interest is better than investing in mutual funds that average maybe 8% over the long run while paying the 4% mortgage interest, ultimately ending up with the same 4% return).

So, coming up with an exact definition of net monthly income is tricky, but for purposes of my 2-3% guideline, I think of it as the number on their paycheck at the end of the week or month (and in the case of business owners, the net salary they pay themselves out of company assets). In other words after taxes, insurance premiums, after 401 k contributions, and other "given" deductions that pretty much everyone will have (or should).

Now, the tricky part to this is 2-3% is that it begs the question "how many times per month? And that's somewhere I doubt anyone could accurately go, because most SDs have some sort of real limitation on how many times per month they can date that is not even defined by finance.
