Much in the same vein, any STG level (and before that BP, and before that CL) provider wanting a pic is a serious warning sign for me and keeping away from that nonsense has served me well for many years.

Like you, I had a pic of some random who looks vaguely like me saved for a few years. I even photoshopped a few things a bit so would get past most image search software with no matches. Can honestly say that out of all the providers who asked for (and received) that pic-exactly one led to an actual date and the date was actually one of the most poor ones I have ever experienced.

I finally just gave up even bothering. Now, the minute a pic is requested I just let it go as there is a 99% chance further pursuit would be a waste of time.
