It takes discipline but I take $20-30 out of the wallet every so often when I think it won't be noticed and stick it in a pocket in a briefcase, or in the office. Eventually, there's enough extra cash to spend.

I have a bank account that the SO isn't aware of, I also have an employer that will do direct deposit into more than one bank account.

When I get a pay increase, I increase the amount I put into the 2nd account. She never feels the pinch, I get extra money. It all works out.

Another way, if you have health care reimbursement, just take those checks or direct deposit into your account.

Separate account won't fly because opening one means "welcome package" is sent which creates more questions. I like the idea of taking out 20 at a time till enough is accumulated. This would kinda make one very picky to decide where to spend that hard earned $$.

Be careful with the secret bank account. Your bank will send you an IRS 1099 form that shows your accounts and then your SO will ask. Also, if you ever get a Credit Report, it will show.

Good point. What I have is an account that doesn't pay interest, so no 1099's generated. Not missing much, after all < 1% really isn't going to help anything these days.

Mine is a checking account, so it may show up on the ChexSystems. I believe they primarily only report NSF's, but in their sample report I did see a reference to checks ordered.

The ideal account, is a savings account, that doesn't pay interest. Something with a low minimum balance. I have my statements sent to my work address. Another good idea, is to close online access. Keep the debit card hidden, maybe also inside your desk at the office.

Keep in mind that legally anything in your desk at your place of employment belongs to your employer, so they can look through the desk any time they choose.

And that's why for the past three years my hobbying activities have declined, just like the economy.

Generally, I'll set aside a small amount of cash each month for when I'm out in the field and see something that I like. And I'll try to stay within budget for the month. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

But one thing for sure, it's a very expensive hobby and it can be as addictive as gambling, alcohol, or drugs. You've got to keep it in check.

Like someone else said in an earlier post, just stash a few bucks on the side on a regular basis and I think by the end of the week / month, you'd be surprised how it adds up without your SO noticing it.
