Anecdotally, the SO's sister and brother in law just recovered from Covid (tested positive). Their experience was lethargy and headaches for two weeks. No other symptoms. SO's Aunt tested positive also. Her symptom is a cough. No other symptoms. Aunt's husband hasn't caught Covid despite being exposed to her the entire time. They are all approximately 60 years old and have no underlying chronic issues like diabetes. I haven't been near them for months, so no worries for me, but I would be mad, too, if the Covid experience is just a bad cold and nothing more.

They don't add up to your conspiracy theory of plugging in COVID deaths for extra cash. As I said, and it seems like you agree, COVID is often not the PRIMARY cause of death, but a contributory one. I just had covid and gave it to my entire family. It's WAY overblown for the vast majority of people. I had every single symptom and really only had 24 hours where I felt like crap. I've been sicker with flu, mono, etc.
As I was getting over it I found myself getting very angry that this thing has controlled my life for almost 9 months. It's no big deal for most people. The media has done a real number on us, creating a sense of panic and fear over something that does not deserve it for most people.
And yes there are cases of healthy people getting really sick and dying, but there are cases of healthy people dropping dead from heart attacks and cancer in their 30's, too. We don't change our whole lives based on that low probability, though.

Even if the number of people that get it and die is 1 in 20 or slightly less (4-5% it's easy to dismiss, until it's someone you care for or love. Think of 20 people that you care for and watch one randomly die slowly. Is that ok? Is that enough to take it seriously?

The fatale rate for school age children is actually higher for the common flu. The numbers stated have been verified by more than one large scale study. Yes. You might die from Covid- you might die from a lot of things and you will die from something. My advice is quit watching CNN.
