In the future all you had to do was reset your phone. None of the tracking apps can be installed remotely. All require hands on the device and nobody has the combination to my safe. If I die they'll need a torch.
Yes the tracking apps can be installed remotely. The technology is there to do it for you and me if one wants to either hire an offensive hacker or write one yourself. I spent weeks researching that issue even before what happened. I found two apps where one can write it to locate, keylogger, activate the mic and camera on the phone and so on. I was half way through writing one from one of the two apps I mentioned. The next step was to open the root of my phone. The problem was my particular phone had bootloader, which on most phones can be unlocked, but my particular model you can't, and Samsung wouldn't release the code to do so. I was then dead in the water until I hired a hacker who turned out to be a scammer LOL. There are honest hackers out there, but you have to weed through them and be careful who you hire, but yes those functions can be loaded remotely. This one app is set up pretty user friendly for the common non-geek. It has a ton of functionality, and not just for offensive purposes. And I did reset my phone three times over the course of about 2 months. If the app is loaded in the root a factory reset doesn't get rid of it I believe. I'm not an expert, but learned a few things.
I never gave her the combination to my safe. I had it hidden quite well. It took her several months to find it LOL. Persistent though. The longer she lived with me the better she got at understanding my habiits and movements.
