What used to happen is a new girl got a lot of attention from the studios and got a lot of shoots early in her career. So it was easy for a girl to go "whoa I can make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing this! But the problem was that the market is focused on being new. A girl will get a lot of attention as a new girl, do the rounds with the major studios, but then won't get many calls after that.
To get repeat gigs in porn you have to be particularly hot in a way that stands out and be consistent in performance that translates on camera. Otherwise you are just going to get the occasional gig for $1-2 k, depending on what you can demand. It's why porn girls will do escorting or sugar on the side. Their shoots will effectively be advertising that lets them get above escort market prices for their time.
Now things have shifted since the pandemic and OnlyFans effectively took over. Mainstream porn shoots drive subs to a girl's OnlyFans and maybe discreet escorting too. The non pro exists on a spectrum. Most of them are really just semi-pros. A pro does this full time as a career and has no expectation of ever stopping. If you offered someone a million bucks and all they had to do was sleep with you once, a very large majority, including the ones touting ethics would say yes if it were guaranteed and their safety was ensured.
There comes a price to where it becomes financially and practically irresponsible to not take the offer because the alternative for most people is decades of work and life being taken away to make the equivalent.
