When you can find providers that have websites and maybe TER reviews, you are getting into the more expensive but more reliable and professional providers. Also, communication with these types of providers generally start with emails or filling out a contact form from their website.
In this range of providers, you will typically need to go through screening, and often have to provide a deposit. I have probably paid a lot more than the guys that scan the STG ads, but I have not been conned, and I was confident that each provider was actually who she represented herself to be. I've had the best luck starting with Tryst or Eros, and if I can find TER reviews and / or a P411 profile and / or a personal website and / or an active Twitter feed, I've been pretty confident about contacting the provider. If they are on Twitter, they will usually have a link to their personal website. I created a throw away Twitter profile and started following providers that I like the looks of, whether they are local or not. Now that Twitter feed shows me lots of nice looking providers that seem to be legit although way more expensive than STG.
Some of the forum members will balk at the price or the screening or the deposit or scream GPS, but this is what has worked for me. I feel safer and more confident going this route.
