This isn't inflationary rates.
Retire if the hobby is too expensive for you. Inflation is a thing. Every necessity is more expensive than it was ten years ago.
This isn't an inflation issue; inflation has not increased 300-400% which is what some are willing to pay today for subpar services.
Confusing Self-Esteem with Posing
I guess you're around the wrong younger people. The young men I'm around aren't lacking in esteem at all. They are more aware of their emotional states than past generations, but they have confidence and don't think the world will be handed to them on a platter.
Perhaps it's specific to which demographic. How educated, what they do for hobbies, whether they played team sports. I've had a ton of interactions with all ages and groups from high-tech, convicted prisoners, athletes, etc. The under-35's are the most afraid of failure, excepting those that have played real team sports all their lives. Other than those, they don't know how to start a task from scratch. They fear judgement to the point where they try to avoid it. Anything less than top-10% is considered a failure, but not playing (working, etc.) at all because of some unspecified blocking issue is perfectly acceptable.
That expectation of being considered top-10% comes with another expectation, of lots of fast promotions and a nice title in three years.
On the bright side, age discrimination was a real issue, especially in tech, until maybe a decade ago. At which point companies realized that their young over-achievers didn't actually achieve.
Negative Review equals banned
Have you all noticed that if a guy writes a negative review of someone on another site, there is a good chance they get banned.
Here is an example.
Person had 13 references, plenty of green points. Yet they were banned.
