They can tow your car if they arrest you for a crime...any crime. Your car cannot necessarily be impounded for that.

If you do not get arrested and have your insurance and DL in order and your tags are current, your car cannot be towed.

There used to be a law that they could tow and impound for 30 days and even keep your car, with just suspicion that a crime occured, but that law was overturned a few years ago.

Existing law authorizes a city, county, or city and county to establish a 5-year pilot program that implements a procedure to declare a motor vehicle to be a public nuisance when the motor vehicle is used in the commission of specified crimes related to prostitution.

Just picking up a woman who they ASSUME is a prostitute seems to violate the ordinance. Latnlykr only gives you part of the issue.

What AB 14 does is allows cities to develop a ordinance that allows the towing of a vehicle used in either commission of prostitution or illegal dumping ONLY if the vehicle operator has been convicted of those crimes within the prior 3 years. Such a limited scope and I'm not aware of any city that has enacted an ordinace permited by this law.

What happened in the past is there was a law passed in City of Los Angeles, Oakland, and a few other places that allowed seizure of a car even if the officers only suspected the person was engaged in soliciting a prostitute. The person did not even have to be arrested. Then the person could contest the seizure and impound via a civil hearing in a criminal court. Obviously a violation of the US constitution and first real proof positive that LA city council members are closet socialists. And obviously struck down by the California Supreme court.

Always heard comments about activity during the day on Alv and always wondered what the deal was. Today I had time to kill in the downtown area and decided to check it out.
