Jay from Janesville STG? Maybe?
I don't see any recent posts from her, but I think she used to associate with Amanda from this area and probably any other peripheral folks that were in that group. People familiar with the Janesville / Beloit area will know who I'm talking about.
I had a very strange experience recently that made me feel like I may have dodged a bullet. It started with an unsolicited text from 'Jay from STG'. I remembered having a text exchange quite a while back with somebody at the number that was posted in Jay's STG ad at the time that ended with that person kind of flying off the handle. I thought I had deleted and blocked at that point, but I may have screwed that up by cleaning up some stuff in my phone. Anyway, I was curious and had some spare time, so I figured I would feel it out.
Typical lengthy time between responses after the first couple messages, but then an appointment was finally arranged. I was told to meet in a certain parking lot, so of course I parked on a side street instead where I had a reasonable view of the area. I was asked what kind of car I was in and I gave a very bland answer. It wasn't false, but it matched more than a couple cars in the area. I got the predctable "I don't see you" At this point I had observed quite a few cars coming and going, but hadn't been able to spot anybody I thought might be her. After I told her I was on a side street, there was a very lengthy drop in communication. I responded a couple of times and then decided to leave. A good 10-15 minutes after my last text I got a request for my FaceBook page which, of course, I declined.
I know you could point at any of these things individually and come up with an argument that it wasn't necessarily an obvious malicious intent and / or somebody trying to take precautions and I wouldn't disagree, but the whole thing taken together really seemed off.
The things that stood out to me were the quality of the language in the texts. I know it's probably a non-PC thing to say, but it came across a little too educated to be one of the typical girls. Then the two specific requests that would have given some level of personal information that 'could' be used to cause you a problem (identifying your car and then the FaceBook page).
Is it possible that there wasn't anything underhanded going on? Sure. But putting all of the pieces together and adding in the fact that the rip-off ratio around these parts seems to have risen dramatically with the last year's difficulties, it feels like something was up. The odd thing to me is that not all of the pieces point to the same thing, but if it smells like shit, you can only blame yourself if you take a bite.
So, here is the number 608-478-7816. If you get an unsolicited text, I would recommend some caution. I never actually saw her, so I have no idea who was actually on the other end of that line.
