I think the cops give themselves too much credit for the cyclical nature of the street trade -- I think the weather plays at least as big a factor (there's always a natural decline in SWs after the summer). Activity around 82nd will increase in the spring.

As a veteran of the hobby who has had numerous encounters with LE throughout the Northwest, BC, and California (I had to give up driving last year because the harassment in Oregon got so bad, and now I get around the Portland area by TriMet), my best piece of advice when confronted by the cops is to give them [b]NOTHING[/b] -- avoid even saying your name and address unless you're [i]"not free to go"[/i] because once you start answering ANY questions, it's harder to stop, and cops are trained to begin interrogations with softball stuff like your name, address, SS number, and phone number to condition you to responding to them. Strongly advise your "date" to do the same thing. Here's a tutorial on how to handle the police that I've put together from various sources, including my own experiences:

You may answer the officer’s questions or ignore him and walk away. You can tell the police that you want to speak to a lawyer before answering any questions. You may refuse to provide your Social Security and telephone numbers to the police. Police can order you to stop if they reasonably suspect that you have committed or are about to commit a crime. You may be detained for only a reasonable period of time. You do not have to leave the vicinity of the stop with the police unless you have been arrested. You do not have to consent to any search and/or seizure. The police may be able to detain you until they obtain a warrant. The police may pat your clothing down for weapons, without consent, if they have reason to believe that you are presently carrying a weapon. You may ask the police for their names, badge numbers, and business cards.[/i]

I would add that if you and your date are (ideally) out of a vehicle and behind a closed door, [b]do not open it for the cops under any circumstances[/b] -- make them break it down, then explain to a court why they thought they had a right to. Do not even reveal your presence if they knock.

I have found often find that you find the best SW's when the economy is slow. There are times when I will pick up a SW even when I am unemployed. This is why I try and keep some savings for the good times.

I saw a dark-colored unmarked, with its disco lights flashing, questioning a motorist in the 9200 block of SE Washington about 8 PM last night. I was on foot, and didn't get close enough to tell if it was a monger and his date.

Do any of you 82nd-stroll guys ever rent motels in that area? I've been in some (for basic shelter rather than hobbying purposes), and they all had a similar "no unregistered guests" policy, and warnings of exclusion or calling the cops if you try to sneak someone into your room without the permission of the front desk. Some of the higher class ones (if you can [i]any[/i] motel in that area [i]high class[/i]) also have obvious surveillance cameras -- though whether anyone is consistently monitoring them or if they're mainly for show is an open question.

Finally, in case you're not aware of it (I wasn't), KPDX has a reality show called [i]Vice Squad[/i] at 10 PM on Tuesday nights, featuring an hour of the type of cops we love to hate. Last night they stung some escorts and did a dramatic raid on a supposed major drug house (though much of the dope was mere marijuana). In these tough times of budget cuts and gargantuan deficits, isn't it great to know our tax dollars are still being wasted on protecting consenting adults from pussy & weed?

Toured 82nd Monday night around 9 pm. Made two trips up and down, LE all busted ass south for some big crime scene, so I was left with my fingers in the cookie jar. Well, not much in the way of cookies. Saw maybe 5-6 all total, picked up a tall, lanky BSW, best lookin of all of them.
