Memorial Day. As defined is for the remembrance of the fallen. Living veterans should not tell anyone they are welcome on Memorial Day as they have not given the Ultimate sacrifice and have not earned that right. As a Marine Corps Veteran discharged for injuries incurred during my service I have not earned that right either. If someone thanks you for your service please extend a proper greeting or a proper hand salute on every day but Memorial Day. Memorial Day is for the DEAD and there is no light for the living to stand in on this day. As a Marine I know I take this stuff way to serious as only a Marine could. To those who have fallen I render a hand salute and to the families of those who have fallen my prayers and deepest gratitude. Semper Fi Death Before Dishonor.

You fail to point out that Memorial Day was originally designated in 1868 for May 30 to be a day to strew flowers on the graves of Union Soldiers who died "during the recent rebellion. " No mention of the Confederate Soldiers who died. That's why Memorial Day wasn't initially embraced in the South. But now Memorial Day has been regulated to a three day weekend and sales of sheets and whatever. So cut us some slack. And as a Southerner who fought in Vietnam, I don't mind someone thanking me for my service. It was much better than being spit on as a Vietnam veteran in 1967 by protesters in college.

[blue]He's right but he was kind of being a dick about it sugar, Marines can be like that, they make them pretty rigid, it's makes them good Marines but tough at cocktail parties. When people thank me for my service on Memorial Day I don't feel the need to finger wag them. I do correct them (gently) if they mention something about sacrifice.

You just keep thanking them if you want. The guys from the rest of the services will understand what you're saying and appreciate it.
