There are legit providers that require a deposit when touring (to weed out time wasters, but also to ensure their trip is worthwhile financially). Some providers also require a small deposit (that'll be part of your services) for sending the address. Again to weed out time wasters and potential stings, then some are just scamming.

My advice with deposits is to generally never do them. Only exception might be a well vetted provider that has credibility of taking deposits and following up with a service. I've paid a deposit with 4 different providers and got burned only once (for $20). Most I've put up for a deposit is $100 but it was for a well known adult star that was touring.
