I learned to refuse all requests for advance or deposit, even from regulars, because of the high probability of getting shafted. I would bet a cold beverage you were not even talking to someone in the US. They were not in the room or even at the hotel. A couple times I turned down the deposit request only to have them back down and give me an address. Then when I arrived got hit with a deposit request for room number, which I declined. One time I arrived to a hotel closed for construction, another I arrived to a hotel that was completely dead with two cars in the lot, suspected they were the maid and manager I saw working. I ask them to tell me the colors of the cars parked outside the room so I can park close and get a made up answer.

I had never met then but she was really unreliable for me with ghosting while trying to get the room #.
