Yes, it IS the law in many states and jurisdictions that the lab that runs STD tests is REQUIRED to file a report with the local HD. While it MAY violate HIPPA rules, if one reads the fine print of any intake document you signed to get tested, you specifically wave your HIPPA rights "when required by law" (or some such language).

So even IF you go the route of buying a home test kit online, once you test positive, a report is going to get sent to you local Health Department. It's the law.

The only work around is to get tested at a health department, where if you test positive, they are going to provide treatment. That should keep things out of your PCP's file and away from insurance, but most HD's require Identification Cards for testing. Use to be one could get tested anonymously.

But IF one is willing to pay out of pocket for the services, then why would a screening place require insurance info? Also, why can't one go to any Doc, not your PCP, on a self-pay basis (negotiate cost upfront!) to talk about anything STD related?
