3. Click "View Image Info."
4. What comes up is a bigger box. Look for "Location:" and what follows is the URL of the pic to be tested on Tin Eye. Copy the URL.
5. Open [url]http://www.TinEye.com[/url].
6. Paste the URL in the panel on the top RIGHT and click “Search.”
7. Note what Tin Eye finds.
8. Tin Eye has searched its inventory of images using the URL.

Using Tin Eye - Method 2:

1. Instead of copying the URL, save the pic to be tested.
2. Open [url]http://www.TinEye.com[/url].
3. Upload the saved pic to the panel on the top LEFT of Tin Eye and click Search.
4. Tin Eye has searched its inventory of images using the pixels.

Getting started -

Tin Eye has browser-specific plug-ins that make running Tin Eye a snap – one click to open the dialog box, a second click on the pic and Tin Eye is off to the races. What I don’t know is whether the plug-in searches URL’s or the pixels. I would think a pixel search is a better search. Manual permits a selection.

We want to know if our girl is the girl in front of the camera, if the pic is recent and representative, and if the girl in the pic will be the girl who shows up. If she pirated her pic we want to know that, also. In other words we want Tin Eye to input a pic and output a review.

This is asking a lot of Tin Eye when we cannot do a good job ourselves even after seeing the girl with our own eyes. How many times have we left an appointment happy with what we saw and got, thinking it was her but we were not entirely sure? Along comes Tin Eye’s computer based search engine and we jump to the conclusion that with technology on our side we have black and white answers at our fingertips we can take to the bank. Not so fast. There’s more to Tin Eye than meets the eye.

Tin Eye Negative -

Tin Eye Negative tells us absolutely nothing. Tin Eye Negative is the most common return meaning the pic was not found in Tin Eye’s inventory of images. Tin Eye is searching its inventory of images taken from the internet, not the internet itself. Tin Eye’s inventory of images is small in relation to the total images on the internet. Tin Eye constantly “crawls” the internet for images like Google “crawls” for text. Tin Eye and Google are always behind the internet. What I don’t know is if Tin Eye “crawls” at a rate faster than the rate new images are being added and catching up each day or falling further behind. My sense is Google “crawls” faster than Tin Eye. We get very few Google Negatives. We get a lot of Tin Eye Negatives. Maybe it has to do with Google being around longer or having more resources. Bottom line: Getting a Tin Eye Negative we are back to square one where we started.

Tin Eye Positive -

Tin Eye Positive tells us very little and requires proper interpretation to have any meaning –

• Pics have always been a peanut-and-shell game. That game is played because it works. Tin Eye is no help in the typical situation.

• Tin Eye cannot tell that the girl in front of the camera who got our attention:

• is the girl who posted the pic and was advertising herself. It could be a pic of anyone taken anytime. Only the photographer knows for sure.

• is the girl who will show up at our door or what she will look like. Our eyes won’t always know for sure either. Only the girl who shows up knows for sure.

• Tin Eye Positive tells us where the pic was found in Tin Eye’s inventory of images we didn’t know about.

• Standing alone that means nothing. It is possible the pic was posted by (i) our girl who looks like the pic or does not, (ii) some other girl (which won’t tell us which girl is the pirate) or (iii) a third-party “repackaging” and advertising site and we won’t know whether their source for the pic was our girl or some other girl.

• Tin Eye Positive showing that the pic is found all over the internet is no more of an indication of lack of authenticity than being found once. Copying by third-party “repackaging” and advertising sites can take the numbers high. That Tin Eye’s inventory is small in relation to the internet can keep the numbers low. At this point our girl has as much change of being a victim of piracy and she has being the pirate. Even if our girl is the poster we don’t know whose pic she posted. Only the photographer knows for sure.

• What is important with Tin Eye Positive is the nature of the sites where the pic that got our attention was found. The nature of these other sites may allow us to make an educated guess whether as a matter of probability our girl pirated the pic off the internet. Examples are catalog, model and porn sites, especially those in a foreign language. Other than this circumstance Tin Eye Positive means nothing at all.

• It is never certain that the girl posting the pic that got our attention is the girl in front of the camera, or she still looks like she did then, or that she will be the girl behind the door when we knock.

• Finally, Tin Eye is a tool best used with Google so the whole thing won’t be limited to a picture show. Google the girl’s website, directory profile, email and phone to find additional ads turning up additional and different pics, websites, profiles, emails and phones. Google each new found website, email and phone so you have everything out there you can find and keep Googling each new find until nothing new turns up. At that point you will have found everything on the internet to be found about her (as of today LOL). This will give you a pretty good idea what you are dealing with. This is the time to run Tin Eye and run it on all the pics, not just some.
